A&C

Answer choices A & C seem very similar, can you please explain why they are different? (I understand how A addresses the producer's response better, but wanted clarity in the choices themselves.. thank you!)

Hi @hallerae, thanks for your post. The trouble with answer choice (C) is that we don't actually know anything about the critic's motives - there is no information in the stimulus that establishes that the theater critic has good or bad motives, or that the producer is challenging those motives.

(C) would be correct if the producer's response had said something like, "You're only putting forth this criticism of theater because you yourself are a failed actor who never managed to land a role." Or something like that - related to the critic's own motives.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Why is B incorrect?

"you yourself are discouraging new audiences from emerging and new talent from joining the theater." How this sentence is not pointing subtly to the motive of the critic? I was almost sure that A was the correct answer choice but for some reason, that "discouraging" in the producer's argument made me think that the critic has a motive of saying that! These answer choices are so subtle hot wo choose a correct answer when I am most of the time stuck between two answer choices?

Hi Ashkan,

We know that the critics words may be discouraging, yet we do not know that they said this in order to discourage people. In fact, this feels more like a call to action rather than an attempt to discourage people. The effect is not the same as the motive, and from the statement, I don't think we can discern the speaker's motive.
