misunderstanding

why is the first sentence of this problem not used to diagram. it contains the word "unless" so I thought the first sentence would be diagramed as a necessary condition

@esther, the first sentence is the conclusion of the passage, so it's not diagrammed as a premise. You could diagram it, but it's not necessary to answer the question. Does that make sense?

In your explanation for this question, how come you didnt apply the "either/or" rule when diagramming the passage. For instance the sentence "EITHER lower its standards OR there will be an acute shortage of nurses" I'd expected that when diagramming, we'd make one variable a necessary condition and then negate the other to make it sufficient. I'd expected the same for the sentence " it is clear that with EITHER shortage of nurses OR lowered entry standards" when diagramming
