Confused

Could someone explain what the logic of the stimulus is? Oftentimes, I read the stimulus and I don't know what the argument structure is so all the answers look right or wrong

I am confused too, could you explain?

Is the stimulus assuming that the terraces were built for soil erosion? And is C wrong because there is no missing assumption? I still don't get why B is the correct answer though

Anita July 5, 2018

@Ashley-Tien @mexicangirl You’re correct that the stimulus is flawed because it assumes that the terraces are used for erosion, not for any other purpose. This is similar to answer C, which assumes his medications are for sleep, not for anything else.

Does that clear it up?

Could someone break down the stimulus?

GLEE November 29, 2018

My screen says C is the correct answer, not B

Jacob-R November 30, 2018

Yes, answer C is correct.

And I’m happy to break down the stimulus. Let’s use symbolic logic:

Flat land -> soil erosion no problem.
Flat land -> no terraces to prevent erosion.
Dooney County -> lots of terraces.

C: People who think Dooney County is flat are wrong.

Do you see the flaw? We know that flat means no terraces to prevent erosion, and that Dooney County has terraces. But the author jumps to the conclusion that this means that Dooney County cannot be flat. But couldn’t people in Dooney County just like terraces, rather than building them to prevent erosion?

I hope that helps.
