Word Usage Comet

Hi, I was between answer choices A and E for this question. Since answer choice E included the word "comet" and not "astroid" I did not choose E. Would a comet still impact the earth as an astroid would? How should I adjust my approach when comparing word usage? Thank you, Emily Menendez

Any ideas?

@EmilyMarieMenendez, both asteroids and comets are "extraterrestrial," which is what the author objects to in the asteroid hypothesis. Since the author prefers to focus on theories that only take into account what is happening on earth and do not depend on objects from space intervening, colliding, or disrupting, (E) provides the best analogy for what the author is talking about.

As for the impact of an asteroid or comet being analogous, the key thing to keep in mind is that they're both extraterrestrial, which is the problem for the author. So in something like this, don't worry too much about the difference between apples and oranges if the author is only talking about fruit from North America.

Does that help?
