@marissa, this is a paradox question, so we're presented with a phenomenon that doesn't make intuitive sense and then asked to determine which of the answers does NOT help to provide an explanation. So the issue that we're trying to figure out is why people would consume 175 more non-alcoholic calories when drinking alcohol.

(E) points to more calories being from carbohydrate heavy foods than fat heavy foods, but this doesn't have anything to do with the phenomenon discussed above. Knowing that a person who had been drinking ate more carbs than fat doesn't explain why they consumed 175 more non-alcoholic calories. All of the other answers provide a possible explanation that would resolve the apparent paradox, but (E) does not. Since you're looking for the EXCEPT answer in this question, (E) is correct.

I hope that helps.

How would D answer the paradox? Is it because of the most attractively served food making you want to eat more?

@Ro13 Yes, that's correct! The more attractively served food will likely be more appetizing, so people will eat more. In addition, the carefully prepared aspect may mean that it's more tasty. I would agree that this is the weakest of the four incorrect choices, but it has the opportunity to explain the difference, unlike (E), for the reasons Chris mentioned above.
