Need help understanding.

Hello! It seems to me that the critic is opposing the first claim by saying it is unlikely that an artist would temper with the work after the original's artist's death. Thus, restoration cannot be justified. If the critic is arguing against the first claim, why isn't that simply the answer?

In other words, why is the answer that the critic is supporting the main claim when he seems opposed to it?
