Help

Can someone explain why this one is only and is not if. How did they come to this conclusion more so than the other?

@bkatie46 not sure I am understanding your question here.

The keyword indicator in this example is "only if".

"Only if" introduces a necessary condition.

Please watch our video lesson on Sufficient & Necessary conditions for a more in-depth discussion of these concepts.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

I chose B- "If Maria trained hard, she could beat a four-time winner." After the answer showed the correct premise, I analyzed my mistake. That answer reversed the premise making the necessary condition sufficient and vice versa. A good lesson to learn as worded arguments hopefully come more frequently. I'll have to watch as Mehran suggests the S/N lecture again. However, my question is the first premise was difficult to diagram. Additionally, I realized I missed the word "each" in that premise which introduced the sufficient condition. I ask because the explanation under the correct answer was slightly difficult in the method used in diagraming the premise. After a while, I was able to figure out the diagram. Again "each" introduces the sufficient condition; why wasn't the necessary not diagrammed, or was it moot? That confused me as I tried several ways to simplify a diagram to link the premises to get to the conclusion. Also, as I become more familiar with worded argument premises, can you give some strategies for creating diagrams for these arguments in a prompt time (I know I need to become more familiar with the keywords concerning which introduces the S/N conditions). If you can, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions. However, I don't want you to repeat the information explained in the logical reasoning lectures. Mahalo.
