I narrowed it down to answers (c) and (d). and ended up picking answer (d) because it uses the word must, whereas answer (c) uses should. Is this the right reason?

(C) says, "the translator should be primarily concerned with reproducing the rhythms and sound patterns of the original, not with transcribing its meaning exactly"
The problem with (C) is that the first part of it is very problematic. The whole point of the analogy is that similar to the rhythms and sound patterns of music, translation maintains the general meaning of the original while altering some things. The analogy does not dismiss the importance of the original meaning, so (C) is out.
(D) says, "the translator must observe the spirit of the original and also the qualities of expression that characterize the language into which the original is translated"
The analogy in the stimulus says the violinist has to be guided by the nature and possibilities of the violin as well as by the original composition. (D) does a great job in mapping the analogy to the translation of poetry by saying we should keep the main gist of the original while simultaneously accounting for the differences between the two types of languages. Thus, (D) is correct.
