Must Be True Questions - - Question 6

Answer D

Why would answer D not be correct? Is it because, (1) The question stem states, "hawaii...host SOME 500 species". Therefore, the exact number is not given. And in answer D, it says exactly 500. (2) Or the question stem says nothing about new species being discovered?

Hi @Kellan, thanks so much for your post. As always, let's start with the stimulus. This one presents a set of facts, rather than an argument - there is no conclusion to speak of. The question stem asks you to select the answer that can be inferred from the passage (thus, this is a Must Be True question).

Answer choice (D) is incorrect, but for neither of the reasons you identify. The stimulus tells you there are between 1,000 and 2,000 species of fruit flies. It also tells you that the place in the world that is most taxonomically diverse with respect to fruit flies is the Hawaiian islands, which host some 500 species.

Notice how answer choice (D) does not specify *where* these additional "500 new species of fruit flies" might be discovered. If they showed up in Hawaii, then Hawaiian fruit flies *could* still be taxonomically diverse, right? The point is just that this answer choice deviates from the given text - it is not textually supported by the stimulus, so it cannot be the right answer on a Must Be True question.

Hope that helps to clarify. Please let us know if you have any additional questions!
