Game Set Up

How could we set up a base considering one grade has to repeat? Generally I would write out 1-6 and fill in the blanks with the courses but I am having trouble grasping the proper set up to solve as quickly and efficiently as possible.

@Rachael,

Great question. For this sequencing game, try setting up 5 slots on the bottom for each of the grades (A through E) so your board looks like this:

_ _ _ _ _
A B C D E

Be careful with your interpretation. It's not that one grade has to repeat, it's that AT LEAST one grade has to repeat. As you'll see in question 1, there are two grades that repeat in that question (meaning two different classes that receive the same grade in two different grade categories, so four classes are contained within two grades)

Then, make sure you have your rules handy.

1) G and P have consecutive grades
2) I and R have consecutive grades
3) E > H
4) G > P (combining this with rule 1, we have GP together)

This is a very open game board, so from here it's best to dive into the question and let the premises in the questions guide you in mapping different boards for the questions.

How does this game board work for you? Let us know if you have more questions!

Why do the tutors assume that the grades go on the bottom but this fellow and I assume the courses go on the bottom? What do you know that we don't? And how do we decide going forward?
Thanks

Hi @Bram,
A good way to decide which variable to use as a base and which variable to assign to positions is looking at which group the rules are largely concerning. For example, here we know that some courses received higher grades that others. When you have a rule that X is before Y or X is higher than Y, it's a good sign that you should set up X and Y as the variables that go in variable positions.

We can also think of the grades here as just the same as numbered positions 1-5 which makes it much easier to see they should go on the bottom. Hope this helps!
