help

if rule one reads the computer must be made in a year earlier than or in the same year of the printer in its office, then how is it that the printer in office one, given that the computer in office one was made in 88, is made in either 88 or 89? Is not 89 a later year than 88? I thought it would be 87 or 88 because the year 87 comes before 88, and 89, no doubt. comes after.

Hey there,

I think you're misreading this rule. You're right, the rule says that
the computer must be made in a year earlier than or in the same year
of the printer in its office.

So, if the computer was made in year X, then the printer would have to
be made in either year X or in year X+1 or X+2

The last rule tells us that C1 is 88.

Combining this with rule 1, we know that P1 must be made in either 88 or 89.

The COMPUTER must be made in the same year or earlier than the printer
in its office.

If the computer was made in 88, then the printer would have to be made
in 88 or 89 to satisfy this rule. Based on what you wrote, it sounds
like you misread the rule to mean that the printer had to be made in a
year earlier or the same year as the computer. However, this is not
the rule. The rule is about computers having to be made earlier or in
the same year as the printers.

Does that make sense? Let us know what you think!

This wording doesnt make sense. When it is earlier, meaning its an earlier date (lesser) in terms of time.

Hi Queenangel,

The setup for this question is giving us a scenario in which the computer in office 3 was bought before the printer in office 3. Our first rule tells us that the computer must be bought before or in the same year as the printer, and our final rule tells us that the printer in 3 was bought in 88. So, we know that the computer was bought before 88, therefore it was bought in 87. I'm not sure about the lesser/greater language, but we have only three years, so the before/after might be the best way to think about this.
