Answer D
Hi LSAT Max,
I had a hard time with this passage, and Q 22 is still difficult to grasp. At first I picked C, but after I redid this passage and its questions I was able to choose D. I'm still not sure if I get the logic behind this question. When line 15 says that serotonin is a derivative of tryptophan, is it safe to mentally picture it as T -> S? Similarly for lines 19-21, I interpreted it as "carbohydrates -> insulin -> amino acids to peripheral tissues" in my head. Is this doing more harm than justice when trying to understand paragraph 2? Many thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the question! (A) is right because in the sentence starting on line 15, it tells us that serotonin is a derivative of tryptophan. That means that we need tryptophan to make serotonin. We then talk about the rate of conversion. This refers to what was discussed directly before: serotonin and tryptophan. In other words, the rate at which we get serotonin from tryptophan.
(D) is wrong because insulin isn’t mentioned until later in the sentence. It doesn’t make sense to talk about “the rate of conversion†way up ahead and then introduce other topics and finally introduce the insulin idea. I wouldn't think too much about the "logic" in this context. Instead, think more about how the sentences and subjects are flowing together. Hope this helps!
