Question and Answer Explanation

Hello! I'm a little confused at the justification as to why E would be the best answer. If someone could kindly explain how to approach the question and why we can eliminate choices A-D it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi @Julie-V,

Thanks for the question! Take a look at the last paragraph for the author's objection to the second hypothesis, which we clearly need to know to answer this question. The author says that 'theories that depend on extraterrestrial intervention seem less convincing than theories like the first," which don't have extraterrestrial intervention. Now, we're looking for an answer choice that provides an explanation against which we can use this objection. As such, the explanation of the extinction of the dinosaurs will have to involve extraterrestrial intervention of some kind, like asteroids. This is what (E) gives us, and what answer choices (A)-(D) lack. Since none of the earlier answer choices have extraterrestrial intervention, we can't apply the author's objection to the rest of them. Does this make sense? Hope this helps!

To clarify again, this question was asking us to find an answer choice that allowed us to apply the author's objection to it? If so, that makes way more sense to me! Thank you for the reply.
