A vs. B

I chose A because of the information in the final paragraph. I don't see the support for B. Please explain.

Hello @cdichiar,

We should pay close attention to the last paragraph for this particular question. However, this paragraph provides more support for B than for A. I'll explain.

Line 60 says: "Future studies might also make profitable use of analyses developed in other areas of women's history as a basis for exploring the social context of women's medical practice."

At face value, it seems that this could support answer choice A, because it does mention the social context. However, A is not specific enough. We want to know specifically about women's history. The political and economic structure of medieval society is not really mentioned in the passage. We want to stick to what is included in the text.

The passage does contain specific references to women's access to medical education. The last sentence of the passage names two things that the author would find very helpful: Information about women's literacy and the control of medical knowledge. This is strong evidence for answer choice B.

Let's keep in mind that we should not view the final paragraph in isolation. We have to consider the author's tone and purpose. There are other clues throughout the passage that support answer choice B. The author laments that female medical practitioners are overlooked, because studies focus on the "upper echelon of 'learned' medicine." Women who did not have formal education would have found another path, on the "legal and social fringes of medicine." This alone would lead me to guess that the author is very interested in the social constraints that kept women from an official medical education.
