Argument Structure Q 11

Hello- Can someone explain more in depth of the difference between a conclusion and the subsidiary conclusion? I am having a hard time differentiating between the two.

Hello @Shireen,

It may be hard to identify at first, but the curator's main conclusion is the first sentence: "The decision to restore the cloak of the central figure in Veronese's painting from its present red to the green found underneath is fully justified." Everything else is given as support for this argument.

"Fully justifiable" is a subjective term, meaning some people might agree with it and others might not. The main conclusion is often something of this nature, it cannot stand on its own and it must be supported by the rest of the passage.

If that sentence was absent, then I would agree with you that the "tampering" conclusion is the main conclusion. However, in this context, it is a subsidiary conclusion derived from the x-rays and chemical tests. It is this conclusion that allows the author to claim full justification.

Ask yourself "What is the author arguing for or against? What is he/she trying to say?" That will usually help you get to the main point.
