first premise confusion

I watched the video, but could not understand how to come up with not PM-->S. I never would have gathered that on my own. Can you please explain further how you gathered that?

Hello @laurenkirwan,

Let's focus on an important phrase in the passage: "The only alternative is subsidy."

This narrows the press' options for survival down to two.
1. Make a profit (PM)
2. Get a subsidy (S)

From this, we are able to gather:
not PM - - - - - - -> S
or
not S - - - - - - - - -> PM

The press must do one or the other in order to survive. We know that if the press doesn't make a profit, then it must get a subsidy. Does that answer your question?
