when do you diagram

how did you know not to diagram everything before "if the press"? i have no one of knowing what to diagram or not. please help

Hi @naty0405,

Thanks for the question. The first sentence of the stimulus would be pretty hard to diagram, and so we don't even attempt to diagram it. While it is POSSIBLE to diagram the second one, it's kind of a weird construction, and once we read the rest of the passage we see that the information presented in it isn't too relevant. These are some of my thoughts, but the more questions you practice, the more you'll be able to figure out what you need to diagram and not. Hope this helps, though!

This is a helpful thread. Further to the above, I tried to diagram the first couple sentences as:

Press --> Profit To Survive
Profit to Survive --> Subsidies and Outside Control
and HJ --> Subsidy

I've watched the video, and understand how it was diagrammed - but how do I avoid diagramming incorrectly, as above? How do I make sure I diagram the right parts of the passage? Magically, I somehow got this question right - but my diagrams ended up confusing me, rather than helping me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
