More Solitary Passages Questions - - Question 11

Which one of the following best describes the function of the second paragraph within the passage as a whole?

B & C

@Mehran can you help differentiate the difference between B & C? Does B not adequately describe paragraph 2's function in the passage "as a whole" whereas C does? How can I avoid making the same mistake of similar questions on other exams?

I went C

Hi @davidamaya and @Lucas,

Thanks for the question! To qualify a claim is to add reservations to it, or to make it less extreme. For example, I might qualify a claim of “It’s definitely going to rain tomorrow” with “Unless there’s no clouds by 9am.” Thus, (B) doesn’t qualify the claim made by the author in the first paragraph - it's not expressing any reservations or trying to "take back" anything the author asserted earlier. Instead, it elaborates on and develops the author’s thesis by presenting a concrete example (signifier and signified), which is what (C) states. Thus, (C) is right, and (B) is wrong. I think the only issue you had here was interpreting the word "qualified," so just remember that it means generally to make a previous statement less absolute. Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any further questions you might have.
