Why not A?
Hello,
I picked A because I thought that the "same socioeconomic condition" they were referring to is the same socioeconomic change present in both theories. I now realize that they meant "same" as in stagnant (so there was no change) after reading your explanation, but how can I prevent from making that mistake again? Or is there another way to eliminate A as an answer?
Thanks!

I was able to eliminate A because it says "they predict different responses." Rather, both theories predicted the same response, which was the social movement and protest activity that we know occurred. Half of A correctly characterizes the theories, because both theories recognize the same socioeconomic change given on line 20. However, we are looking for how the theories are different.
Where these theories differ is the "impetus to protest" (line 30). What caused the end result? "Rising expectations" says that some advancement led to the desire for more advancement. "Relative deprivation" says that, while some advancement did occur, white supremacy clearly remained, which motivated the protesters. This is the slight difference in the motivation of the protesters that characterizes the two theories. This is best expressed by D.
