Last sentence of passage
I am unclear why the last sentence "it is clear that with either a shortage of nurses or lowered entrance standards for the profession, the current high quality of health care cannot be maintained" was diagrammed as follows:
ASN or LES -> not HQHC
I thought with "either" statements we are supposed to choose the Necessary condition and negate the sufficient? But when diagrammed in the explanation it was diagrammed as an IF -> THEN statement.
Please explain how to know when to apply the rule or not.

Good question. Although that last sentence contains the word "either," it is not an either/or statement as you saw in Mehran's lesson. That refers to a scenario in which there are only two possibilities. For example, I am either short or tall. From this, we derive if/then statements. If I'm not short, then I'm tall. not S - - - - -> T If I'm not tall, them I'm short. not T - - - - - > S These are the phrases for which you choose the necessary condition and negate the sufficient condition.
We diagram that last sentence as an if/then statement because it is one! In this case, the "when" acts as an "if." To paraphrase: If there is either a shortage of nurses or lowered entrance standards, then the current quality of healthcare cannot be maintained.
ASN or LES - - - - - > not HQHC
You have to be able to recognize if/then statements even when they are not explicitly written. It seems like you were able to do so for the first sentence, even though it says "unless."
