In question 1 during the game setup, the explanation is confusing because it said that Irving must be ahead of Brandt, thus eliminating the possibility of it going 5th. I don't understand why though.

This inference is a combination of rules 4 and 6. Rule 4 tells us that E > B and rule 6 tells us that I > D > E. We can combine these rules to form the following chain: I > D > E > B
which demonstrates that at least three employees must be hired after I, thus at least 3 days must be available after I hire, meaning he cannot be hired on days #5, #6 or #7 since we have 7 days total.
