The conclusion of the argument is that 18th century chemistry would have been more advanced if the 17th century alchemists had published their results. However, I don't see anything in the stimulus suggesting that specialization is the reason for the lack of published experiments. Rather, like Sir Isaac Newton, the alchemists simply kept their experiments a secret.
In addition, scientists' understanding of various concepts is not really relevant to the conclusion. We need something which indicates that the field of chemistry itself could have been more advanced. B is the assumption at the heart of the argument, because the conclusion is about advances in science and how even unsuccessful experiments (alchemy) can contribute.
