Solitary Passages Questions - - Question 1

Which one of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?

Should I be timing myself?

Although I'm planning on taking the LSAT in August, I decided to give myself some extra time to study by starting the course earlier than recommended. I just got past the Solitary Passages Lecture. So, at this point in my studying, should I be trying to finish each passage/set of questions in under 8:45? Or should I just take however long I need (while obviously not being super slow) and be mindful of how long it takes me to finish the questions? This wasn't really covered in the lecture so I'm confused as to when I should concern myself with timing on reading comprehension.

Hey @ielkind, I think starting off, now, you might want to try it out once or twice to see how you do under strict time conditions, but otherwise I would recommend taking your time and being mindful of how much time you take. Later on, you'll need to get stricter with time, but it seems like you're in the beginning stages still.

As of now, I'm averaging 10-11 minutes per passage in order to get all of the questions right. What strategies could I employ to improve my timing?

Hi @ielkind, thanks for the question.

Of course, the obvious answer is the more you practice, eventually the faster you get. But speaking from personal experience, I think what helped me was tweaking my approach and trying to figure out exactly how detail oriented I could be and get used to a certain rhythm. I would try to be a little less specifics oriented in order to get the timing down and more focused on understanding the flow of information as well as the different viewpoints presented.

Eventually as you keep practicing and refining your process, the time will come down naturally as a consequence.

Also, I'm not sure if you are making physical notes on paper. Or highlighting. But I would keep both of those to an absolute minimum to avoid getting caught up time-wise in writing. It is more helpful to be super focused and read with intent.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
