Please explain eliminating A

Hello I tried very hard to understand TestMax's instructor Jacob's response as to why A should be eliminated. But I could not. Most of the threads that instructor Jacob writes/wrote are blurred with symbols rather than letters. TestMax, please tell me why A should be eliminated. Why? Thank you

Please, when you have the chance, explain to me the reasoning behind eliminating A above.

Thank you.

Hi @Mazen,

You've probably figured this out by now, but (A) focuses on "observing contemporary societies," and (B) focuses on "understanding ancient societies."

The opening sentence tells us that we're primarily concerned with latter:
"Direct observation of contemporary societies at the threshold of widespread literacy has not assisted our understanding of how such literacy altered ancient Greek society, in particular its political culture."
The passage is about using contemporary society to understand ancient Greek society. The observation of contemporary societies is the weakness in the approach.
