Hi @emallas,Happy to help!
"All parrots can learn to speak a few words and phrases."
P --> SFWP
Not SFWP --> Not P
"Not all parrots have equally pleasant dispositions." Therefore, some parrots are not pleasant.
Parrots - some - Not Pleasant
Remember that 'some' statements are reversible:
Not Pleasant - some - Parrots
"Some of those native to Australia can be counted on for a sweet temper."
Australian Parrots - some - Pleasant
Pleasant - some - Australian Parrots
Because Australian parrots are a type of parrot, we can also conclude that:
Parrots - some - Pleasant
Pleasant - some - Parrots
"Almost any parrot will show tremendous affection for an owner who raised them from a chick by hand-feeding them." Note that "almost any" parrot means "most parrots."
Parrots - most - Love Owner Hand-fed from Chick
Remember that 'most' statements can be reversed if we use 'some.'
Love Owner Hand-fed from Chick - some - Parrots
There are two requirements for making a valid deduction with quantifiers:
(1) Must have a S&N statement
Exception: two 'most' statements which have the left side in common
(2) Must have sufficient condition in common
There are two options for making valid deductions here:
(1) Not Pleasant - some - Parrots --> SFWP
(2) We can also combine the S&N statement with the Australian parrot statement.
Pleasant - some - Parrots --> SFWP
It is this second deduction which is restated by answer choice (A) making it the correct answer:
Pleasant - some - Parrots --> SFWP
Pleasant - some - SFWP
