Reference to a Ban?

I'm not sure why the answer includes reference to a ban? How is a ban on breeding these horses insinuated by the passage? It seems to me that it is only discouraged, not necessarily banned.

Happy to help!

Neither the passage nor (B) states that there is/should be a ban. Instead, both support the idea that there should NOT be a ban.

We are told that some horse breeders conclude that horses with the defect in question should not be bred. You are correct that this means the breeders are discouraging but not banning such breeding. The veterinarian speaking in the passage disagrees with the beliefs of the breeders. This does not necessarily mean that the veterinarian believes the horses should be bred, just that the horses should not not be bred. Obviously we don't like the sound of this double negative, so this belief is rephrased in a way that is easier to understand- the breeding of the horses should be allowed/the breeding of the horses should not be banned.

Does that make sense? Please let us know if you have any other questions!

I thought the same thing, Skylar I think I get what you are hinting at here but I still don't understand. Could you try and explain your response in other words. I still don't understand why the word "ban" was in the correct answer choice. I specifically eliminated that choice because the passage did not discuss anything pertaining to banning the animal and did not want to assume "ban" was hinted at in the passage. While studying we are constantly told that we need to use the information given in the passage but other times we are told that we need to assume information in the passage! Help me understand!!! Thank you for your time and attention to this chat.

@brylee, the veterinarian says that the racehorse breeders are incorrect because the disease's severity can be controlled and the defect actually produces beautiful horses that are in high demand.

In terms of the statements and what they're supporting, the last two of the vet's statements are supporting her first statement, that the racehorse breeders are incorrect. The vet thinks that it's fine breeding these horses.

Although worded a little convolutedly, A captures the main point well. The vet is claiming that the breeders who claim that we should not breed the horses are incorrect. So, we should be able to breed them, and there should not be a ban on breeding them. Thus, A is correct.

Hi Ravi, did you mean the correct answer is B?

I read through all the posts on this message board and it's seems that the best way to answer this question is by coming to the conclusion that ultimately in order to find the correct answer, you have to choose the "best" answer possible? I guess similar to, if not the same, by process of elimination.

Also from my understanding, "absolute ban" can be considered too extreme but in this context it's justified, but I still don't understand how and why.

And for E the reason why it's incorrect is because it states "any" disease, not one mentioned specific disease. "Any" seems to be too extreme here too.
So why is okay to use "absolute ban" and not okay to use "any" since they both seem too extreme?

Yep, it looks like this might have been a case of "b" autocorrecting to A. For this question is is probably best to find the conclusion in the stimulus, and then try to find the answer choice that paraphrases that best. The conclusion comes at the beginning of the third sentence, which is that the breeders who want a Ban are wrong. While there is a slight difference in tone, it is roughly the same thing to say "it would be wrong to say they should not be bred " and "there should not be an absolute ban on breeding."

E is wrong because the vet is only referencing one particular case. We have no idea about her views on breeding racehorses with other diseases.
