@RobIII, happy to help! The word "unless" is a special Sufficient/Necessary indicator. To diagram the word "unless," we need to do two things.
(1) make the part of the sentence immediately following the word "unless" the Necessary condition
(2) negate the other part of the sentence and make it the Sufficient condition
Our sentence is: Harry could never have defeated Voldemort unless he was the chosen one.
The part of the sentence immediately following the word "unless" is "he was the chosen one," so this is our Necessary condition. The other part of the sentence is "Harry could never have defeated Voldemort." We negate this to get "Harry could have defeated Voldemort." This is our Sufficient condition. Remember, our diagram goes: Sufficient -> Necessary.
This gives us: Harry could have defeated Voldemort -> He was the chosen one
We can simplify this to: DV -> CO
We can think about this as: If Harry could have defeated Voldemort, then he was the chosen one.
Does that help? Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi,We know that Harry could not have beaten Voldemort unless he were the chosen one. This means that the only way he can DV is if he is the chosen one. So, we know that if Harry did win, then he must have been the chosen one- so If HDV -> CO. However, being the chosen one does not mean that he is guaranteed to be the chosen one. Perhaps he could have been the chosen one but also been betrayed by an ally (Snape?), or simply he was the chosen one but that still was not enough. The statement tells us that being the chosen one is needed to beat Voldemort, but it does not tell us that being the chosen one also guarantees one to beat Voldemort.
