For the parameter "Lalitha performs third only if Norton performs fifth", why is "Norton performs fifth" treated as the then statement? The way I understood this problem is "If Norton performs fifth, then Lalitha must perform third".

Happy to help!

The phrase "only if" introduces the necessary condition. Be careful with this, as it is different than "if" by itself, which introduces the sufficient condition.

With this in mind, let's look at the statement "Lalitha performs third only if Norton performs fifth." The part of the sentence following the phrase "only if" will be our necessary condition. This is "Norton performs fifth." The other part of the sentence will be our sufficient condition. This is "Lalitha performs third."

This gives us a diagram of: Lalitha performs third -> Norton performs fifth

Does that make sense? Hope it helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
