Why is E wrong
I understand why B is correct, but I ultimately chose E because it also points to the author's preference for a regional rather than local analysis.
Is E wrong because it is too much of an inference to say that the author considers regional context "An important advantage" of the last hypothesis?

You are correct! We know that the author believes that this is the most plausible hypothesis, but there is not enough evidence in the passage to suggest that the reason this hypothesis is the most plausible is that it considers species competition in a regional as opposed to a local context.
