Confusing Review Explanations

I am confused by the explanations written in the review section. For your explanation of why A is wrong, you say: Meyers doesn't grant permission. For your explanation of why D is right, you say: By giving permission to Oscar to use passages from her work, Ethel relinquished her exclusive right to that material. Are you saying there's a difference between "granting permission" and "giving permission"? Why is A better than D?

Hi @odsimkins,

Thanks for the question! So let’s remember what the stimulus is saying. Oscar’s saying he’s been accused of plagiarizing, but actually, he hasn’t, because Myers gave him permission in private correspondence to do so.

Millie then objects to this, saying Myers can’t give permission to plagiarize, since plagiarism also is a type of lie that misleads readers, and a lie isn’t a lie if another person agrees.

Now we’re looking for an answer choice that would help justify Oscar’s judgment. (A) tells us that if an author doesn’t grant the writer permission, a writer can’t quote passages from another published sources. But (A) doesn’t apply here, because Myers did grant permission, and (A) applies to situations where no situation is granted. This is why (A) is wrong. So it’s not that Myers doesn’t grant permission; it’s that he does grant permission, but (A) is about people who don’t grant permission.

(D), on the other hand, talks about how if a writer relinquishes an exclusive right to the material, then an author can quote freely without attribution. And this does apply. Myers relinquished an exclusive right by giving Oscar permission. And since (D) applies, then that would strengthen Oscar’s point.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.

There are so many typos and mistaken explanations like this throughout this section especially, but it's also present throughout the others as well. The answer explanation for A is clearly wrong, so why is it still left that way.
