Hi @Karston,Thanks for the question! So we’re being asked here for the primary purpose of the passage. This is a good thing to think of how you would answer in your head before you look at the answer choices. What’s going on here in this passage? Well, we’re basically talking about Myne Own Ground by Green and Innes, which focuses on what Africans in the US were able to accomplish instead of the harms done by slavery. We basically are presented with and evaluate the claims in this work. So that’s a pretty good rough idea of what the primary purpose is.
Looking at the answer choices, (D) seems to match this pretty well! We are presented with and then evaluate an interpretation, which is the interpretation in Myne Own Ground.
(B), on the other hand, tells us that the primary purpose is to “advocate a new approach.” What new approach is advocated? Is it the one that Breen and Innes use? Sure, the author appreciates what they do, but that’s not enough to say that the primary purpose is to advocate that new approach. The main thing that’s going on here is analyzing their work. If the primary purpose were to advocate a new approach, we’d expect more about the shortcomings of the old approach, or other examples of people using the new approach, or a more direct comparison of the new approach against the old approach. None of that happens, and so (D) is the better answer, not (B).
Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.

Thanks for this explanation! I too chose B, but I see the illustration you drew on what "advocacy" would look like in writing vs. interpreting
