Just to reiterate

So basically, say there are 1000 criminals. Also say 50% of all criminals who are publicly defended and 50% of people who are privately defended are guilty of their crimes (not convicted, just are guilty prior to conviction). Hence, If there are an even percentage of guilty criminals yet a higher amount of guilty convictions with public defenders, the deciding factor is the expensive private defender. Does that logic make sense?

That logic makes sense as long as you're assuming that ALL other factors are equal (geography, difficulty of convicting someone in a particular area, etc.). If we include those necessary assumptions, then yes, you are correct.
