If J and M are the only sapphires selected, which one of the following could be true?

Why is B the correct answer here? I thought that this would mean that we have to use the 2 - 2 - 2 numerical distribution here, which is not allowed. Would you please be able to walk through the reasoning for each of the answers here? Thank you!! Really struggling with this game!

Hi @Anna2020,

Thanks for the question! So let’s say that J and M are the only sapphires selected. Well, this actually means we aren’t using the 2-2-2 numerical distribution here. Remember, take a look at rule 2. If exactly 2 of the sapphires are selected, exactly one of the rubies is selected. Well, we know that exactly 2 of the sapphires are selected, so one ruby is selected, leaving 3 slots for topaz to be selected. so this is a 2-1-3 distribution.

Now we know that we’re picking 3 topaz stones, and we also know that we can’t have W and Z together. So we know we’re picking X and Y, and one of W or Z. But we also know that if we pick M, we pick W. So our topaz stones are X, Y, and W. We also know that when we pick W, we don’t pick H or Z. So we can’t have H be an option for the ruby, so the ruby is F or G. And that means that the only possible option is (B), that both F and X are both selected.

(A) is out because we only get one ruby.
?(C) is out because if we pick W, we don’t pick H.

(D) is out because J and M are the only sapphires selected, so we can’t pick K.

(E) is out because we picked M, so we pick W, and if we pick W, we don’t pick Z.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.
