Question 11: Sufficient and Necessary Problem Sets
Nursing schools cannot attract a greater number of able applicants than they currently do unless the problems of low wages and high-stress working conditions in the nursing profession are solved. If the pool of able applicants to nursing school does not increase beyond the current level, either the profession will have to lower its entrance standards, or there will soon be an acute shortage of nurses. It is not certain, however, that lowering entrance standards will avert a shortage. It is clear that with either a shortage of nurses or lowered entrance standards for the profession, the current high quality of health care cannot be maintained.
Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?
This one was really tricky. I was down to the answer choices 'C' and 'E'. There was a lot of "either/or" language present in the passage, so I did my best to follow the rules for that: Either/Or- at least one may exist. Step 1: Pick a variable and make it a Necessary condition; Step 2: Negate and make a Sufficient condition. The passage language seemed to indicate that the contrapositive would be 'C', which is the answer I chose. It seemed to logically coincide with the rules. However, the correct answer choice was 'E' and that seemed to be a restatement of the passage. Can you kindly please clarify why answer choice 'E' is the more correct answer choice?
Thank You

Hi, to add onto this. Could you please explain why answer choice E was diagrammed as an "OR" statement and not a "AND" statement? It states "... if the problems of low wages AND high-stress working conditions in the nursing profession are not solved., so I diagrammed it as what it says. Please and thank you.
