I am confused on how the knife cannot be third. I know how the plate is 7th.

Finally, on to the question. We are given that Ron washed the spoon immediately before the fork. Because the knife has to come before the spoon, we know know the order of our utensils: KSF. Therefore, it is impossible for the knife to be 3rd. It must be either 1st or 5th.
