Why is the answer not C?

I keep getting these questions wrong and it is literally frustrating! And I don't want to give up. However, this is the basic, "straightforward" questions that I do not understand. I feel like if I do not understand these questions how am I able to understand the next few lessons? Can someone help me out on how to understand these types of questions?
