How did we determine that H and I are the same grade?

How is it determined that he got a D in Italian? Is it possible that both I and R get an E since we only know that they are consecutive? The question said that H > R but we don't necessarily know that H isn't higher than I either. Please explain!

(cont.) in this case, we wouldn't be able to tell ALL the grades which is why this question popped up!

Hi @Molly,

Thanks for the question! I think you kind of answered your own question—I and R cannot BOTH get an E, since they are consecutive! Consecutive means next to each other, and not the same. “E” is not consecutive to itself; the only grade consecutive to E is D.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.
