Regarding choices B & C

Hello LSATMax. When attempting this question, I narrowed it down to B and C and ended up choosing C. Why is C wrong? It literally says in line 43 that "the sea is, in effect, a canal." It also says in line 47 that the sea is "always a viable highway for the transport of goods." I chose C because I took the text at face value. What is wrong with my way of reading the passage? By looking at the text at face value, I cannot find anything that proves that B is correct.

A reply to Doyle's question would be helpful. Initially, I chose B, but then after reading the text to double-check I switched my answer to C. Can we get a comparison on each answer choice? Thanks.

I'm not a tutor, but I did have a good grasp of the passage and this is why I chose B:

You're right in that it literally says "the sea is, in effect, a canal", but the significance of this stems from the part you left out "...for commercial activity" (aka commerce). The sea (in being called a canal) is significant because of its relationship with trade and commerce - not for being a canal in itself but what the canal represents in the bigger picture. A few lines after, the author also says "I consider Lane's sea simply an environment for human activity" - another indication that the sea's importance comes from the idea of trade/commerce ("human activity"), which is portrayed in Lane's paintings.
