True vs. False Premise

How do we know when a premise is false or not? I was under the impression we are to abandon outside knowledge of the world and take the information in front of us as true. Where is that line drawn? How can we recognize that line?

Exactly! This had me confused as well! For the second example on page 6 about girls names sue, how were we supposed to decide if the premise was false if we hadn't been shown the song or by chance had never actually met a dude named sue? Because in that situations "world" the premise is that girls are named sue and we weren't given anything to contradict it until outside knowledge came in. So it would be logical to assume the premise is true and the argument is logical based on the formal material we were given.

I share the same concern as you Marissa.

I was thinking this too! I specifically to the Sue is a woman statement. Very odd. Would like an explanation for this.
