Use of the word "ozone"

Although I now understand why the correct answer choice was E, I am confused where ozone came from? Ozone is the result of aerosols released into the atmosphere and not related to acid rain. Can you lease explain why using the word Ozone wouldn't disqualify that answer choice?

Hi @kbaker, we are told that by reducing the amount of nitrous pollution we will reduce the amount of noxious ozone in the final sentence. Since choosing a new way of powering factories (clean coal) would reduce the amount of nitrogen pollutants, we also know that doing so would in turn reduce the amount of ozone.

I'm not sure where you got the information that ozone is the result of aerosols released into the atmosphere, but remember that we cannot bring in outside information. The stimulus tells us that cutting nitrous pollution will lead to a reduction in noxious ozone, and we have to accept this as true.

I think this passage might be using the word "noxious" in a context different than we would in everyday speech. We might think of gross, unpleasant, or vile as synonyms for noxious, but in this context I think noxious means "containing nitrogen." That is, noxious ozone is ozone that also contains nitrogen. Regardless, we can only accept what the passage tells us is true, and not bring in outside knowledge.
