I chose D, because I believed the author was saying now that the historian did the study he was now saying that the study was valuable even though other historians saw no value in it.

The issue with D here is that Kolchin didn't question the value of comparing slavery and serfdom (I.e. say there's no point in comparing) rather he just analyzed the difference between Russia and the US. Here we should choose A because not only does it match better generally, it also gets at resistance which is the key point of the third paragraph.
