Hi @jcj2433, nice job on getting to the answer despite confusion about the assumption part! I think that the author never firmly establishes the link between stability and speciation in the Amazon basin, only in the deep sea. The assumption in its most general form is that what is true of the deep sea is true of the Amazon, which is not firmly established in paragraph one.
