If the corrective surgery completely optional

The answer anticipation explains the correct answer by assuming that the corrective surgery is optional. I don’t see any reference to that in the stimulus. I.ruled out answer choice A because of this assumption. Should I be less strict with my elimination process? Thanks!

So based on the stimulus alone, we actually don't know whether the corrective surgery is optional. If the abnormality is, for example, a heart defect, then the owners of purebred dogs will probably not have a choice, and they will have to pay thousands of dollars for the surgery. However, if the abnormality is something purely cosmetic, say one ear is bigger than the other, for example, then these surgeries might be optional. Before we get to the answer options, we don't know whether the surgeries are required or optional. However answer option A, by telling us that the abnormalities don't affect the dogs well-being, is suggesting that the abnormalities don't pose serious health problems, and thus are optional surgeries. I would say for weaken and strengthen questions, make sure that you give each answer option a decent evaluation, because for these types of questions an answer option could present a piece of information that might not be what you were expecting, but could still strengthen or weaken the argument.
