Question 1 The argument requires the assumption that

I don't recall in the lecture video what the word "REQUIRES" introduces or is it one of the other logical reasoning lectures?

Hi Lamont,

If you see the word “requires” in a question stem, you are probably on a strengthen with necessary premise question. If you see “requires” in a stimulus, it is introducing a necessary condition. You can remember this because, by definition, if something is required, it is also necessary.

Another tip: if you see the word “assumption” or “assume" in a question stem, you are likely on either a strengthen with sufficient premise question or a strengthen with necessary premise question. From there, look to see if the stem is qualified with something along the lines of “if the following is true”, or even just look for the word “if”.

“Assumption/Assume” + “if” = strengthen with sufficient premise

“Assumption/Assume” without “if” = strengthen with necessary premise

On this question, it says:

“The argument requires the assumption that”.

So the word assumption tells us that it is a strengthen with sufficient or necessary premise question. Since it does say “if the following is true”, we know it is a strengthen with sufficient premise question.

Compare that with another stem:

"Atrens's conclusion follows logically if which one of the following is assumed?”

Here, it again says assume, but it also has “if which one of the following”, so this is a strengthen with sufficient premise question.

Please let me know if I can clarify in any way.

Hope this helps!
