Question 10 Help!

Hello! Why wouldn't answer A be the better choice since it shows an alternate cause with the same effect? The answer also states that schools of paleontology adhere to this different theory so it would have some credibility. Thank you!

Hi @ivana.bailey,

Great question.

The stimulus states that the comet theory is one plausible explanation for the disappearance of the dinosaurs. This does not preclude the possibility of there existing other plausible explanations of the phenomenon. Furthermore, answer choice A does not indicate whether the alternative explanation is plausible or not. For all we know, that explanation may have been proved wrong time after time. Even if it has some credibility as you state, we still have to make some assumptions for that answer choice to weaken. Schools of paleontology can, and will at times, make inaccurate conclusions.

Does that make sense? Let me know if you have further questions and I can go into more detail.
