Help

Why wouldn't it be M & I -> DFW. It says, only if there are morals and intelligence will a democracy to function well. I don't understand how you get to DFW without M &I first.

Hi Sherry,

Our statement reads as "only if M and I will there be a WFD." Only if introduces a necessary condition- this statement is the same as saying that without a M and I electorate, there will not be a WFD. This means that if there is a WFD, there must have been an M and I, which is a necessary condition for a WDF.

We could diagram this as

If WFD -> M&I

and the contrapositive as

If no M&I -> no WDF.

Only if statements are tricky, but they always introduce a necessary condition.
