General strategy question

Hello, can it be explained more in-depth what the purpose is of taking the time to decide whether the passage is a valid argument or not? I've been wondering this for all logical reasoning questions in general, not just weaken questions

Hi Balde,

The vast majority of arguments you see will be flawed in some way- with the exception of parallel reasoning. It is important to understand why an argument is flawed because almost every question type that deals with arguments (that is, not including paradox or must be true) will involve an understanding of the flaw.

For argument structure and main point questions, the flaw is less important, although still useful to understand.

For strengthen or weaken questions, you will likely be addressing or attacking the flaw.

For strengthen with necessary questions, you will need to completely fix the flaw, for strengthen with necessary questions, an understanding of the flaw can help to see what the author must believe.

Error in reasoning questions just ask you to name the flaw.

While it is not always necessary to understand the flaw, it will benefit you for the vast majority of LR questions.
