If the summer program offers literature, then which one of the following could be true?

Confused about M

How is M a floater? Why is it true that M does not have to be offered when L is offered? The rule that M --> L or S is confusing me because there is no S but there is L, so shouldn't there be M?

Hi Studying0,

We know that if M -> L/S

That does not mean that we must have M if we have L or S.

It might be a good idea to review sufficient and necessary conditions.

Isn't this restriction a contrapositive "If mathematics is offered, then either literature or sociology (but not both) is offered."

Because of the "IF" as an indicator for a contrapositive and if you flip it, if literature is offered, then mathematics would be required to be offered no? I chose question C because that's the only one that made sense to me but I'm not entirely sure why it is correct.

Hi, the contrapositive of the rule in question would be that if neither L nor S (or if both) are offered, then math cannot be offered. Contrapositives mean reversing and negating. Not just flipping.
