Why not (B) or (C)?
I thought the conclusion was "multinational grain companies operate so as to maximize profits" and therefore was leaning towards answers (B) and (C). I was thinking back to the lecture where we are supposed to find the conclusion of the passage and then find the answer choice that directly restates that conclusion in helping to find the main point of the passage. I read the explanation for the answer, but would like more clarification, please!

Hi, the part you identified as a conclusion actually supports the second clause in that sentence. Since they are profit maximizes, they are therefore unable to be relied on to support change. The rest of the argument supports the idea that maximizing profit means you are not able to be relied on to support change. There is nothing here that supports the fact they are intended to make money.
