Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the reason D does not work is because the conclusion confines itself to autistic children, not to children without autism. I ruled it out on that basis alone. Was that the correct instinct or would that bite me later down the road?

I think this is generally correct. I would caution you to avoid completely dismissing something that seems "out of scope" at first, and make an effort to understand how, if at all, it relates to the argument, however, in this case your instinct would be correct.
